THERMAL GOVERNANCE

According to our understanding, “thermal governance” replaces the 20th century’s notion of “climate control” by pioneering climate management on other scales, relying on a conscious integration of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. The one-sided focus on either “well-tempered environments” (interiors) or “meteorology and urban design” (exteriors) shall be overcome, and the thermal dialectics between inside and outside elaborated instead. It was the critical goal of the research at our chair to outline this new epistemological enclosure from the perspective of architecture. Pursuant to the ideas of early modern urban climatology, thermal governance aims at encompassing indoor and outdoor in one epistemological framework.

Sascha Roesler is an urban scholar and architectural theorist, working at the intersection of architecture, ethnography, and science and technology studies. He is the Associate Professor for Theory of Urbanization and Urban Environments at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, Università della Svizzera Italiana, Switzerland. Between 2013 and 2015, Roesler was a senior researcher at the Future Cities Laboratory (Singapore-ETH Centre for Global Environmental Sustainability), and between 2015 and 2021 had the position of Swiss National Science Foundation Professor for Architecture and Theory at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, leading a research group on “Architecture and Urban Climates.”
